The House of Representatives member for Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency of Oyo State, Mr Shina Peller, in collaboration with Lead Generation Initiate, has trained a total of 160 youths on leadership.
The two-day programme, held at Jogor Events and Conference Center, Ibadan garnered youths from all walks of life from across Oyo State and beyond who participated in the training.
The leadership training programme was aimed at developing a new generation of leaders with the aim of catalysing positive national growth and development.
According to the organisers, the programme is non-political and non-profit making targeted at creating opportunities for young people to channel their creativity, energy and aspirations towards adding value to their various communities.
Peller, who is the lead initiator of the programme, said he wants to develop the interest of the youth in areas of leadership, governance, social inclusion and participation in the democratic and political processes in Nigeria.
He said, “The motive behind this project is to call the young people in Nigeria to take responsibility for building their immediate communities. Most of the young Nigerians are tired of the present situation and that is why we see most of our young people focusing on ‘Big brother Naija’ and all the entertainment programmes.
“I believe it is high time we set up a sustainable structure which we can be able to ride on in order to achieve a country of our aim and we can do that by building our immediate communities. That is what we are doing here.
“We are aware that the voice of every young Nigerian needs to be heard – our programmes are community targeted to galvanise, train, support, and raise the voices and stake of the Nigerians youth. We are building a new generation of young people that can take responsibility for fixing their communities and country through active participation in the socio-political process.
“I believe it is high time for us to re-write the story of our country and that starts from building our immediate environment. The leaders in Nigeria are the ones that will make policies that will affect businesses and our personal lives and that is why we want to give opportunity to young people to channel their creativity and aspiration into nation-building.”
A participant, Adisa Idris, lauded the organisers for the gesture saying it is memorable to be part of those planning for the generation to come.
The Chief Executive Officer, Ufitfly, Evangelist Ajibola Ogunkeyede, who was at the programme, said it is high time the younger generation seized the available opportunity to be part of governance in the country.
