African nations have been urged to allot parts of the money used for procurement of arms and ammunition to electricity in a bid to improve standard of living of the people in the continent.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, John Ayodele, made the call at the Power and Water Exhibition and Conference held in Lagos on Tuesday while addressing stakeholders in the industry.
The IBEDC chief attributed lack of accurate data for energy demand in Africa as top factor militating against the improvement of power for optimal performance.
Ayodele, who was a panelist on the discourse centred on, ‘Together for a better tomorrow – Regional electricity cooperation and integration,’ said that “African nations should devote parts of the money used for ammunition on electricity.
“Such move will have direct improvement on the standard of living in the continent.
“For Africa to be self-sufficient, we must integrate ourselves and be willing to do the needful.
“The event provides the opportunity for the players in the industry to be acquainted with innovations and inventions that will greatly improve our services to our esteemed customers.”
Participants at the conference brainstormed on solutions to challenges besetting the sector just as it attempted to attract global audience for collaboration.
