The Alaafin of Oyo, Lamidi Adeyemi, has joined his ancestors.
Oba Adeyemi passed on in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.
The monarch hailed from the Alowodu Ruling House, in Oyo town.
The remains of the First Class Yoruba traditional ruler were said to have been brought to Oyo in the early hours of Saturday.
Traditional rites for the 83 years old monarch, the longest reigning Alaafin ever, have begun, palace sources revealed.
Oba Adeyemi ruled for 52 years.
The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi.’
Bashorun is expected to lead Oyo town before a new Alaafin is installed.
It was learnt that there were initial plans to fly the old king abroad before he passed on late Friday night.
His death came after the passage of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji; and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi.
The Agunloye Ruling House is said to be the next in line to produce the next Oyo monarch.
