The false allegation that the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Reverend Supo Ayokunle, supports the execution of a Kano musician by a Sharia court is both infamous and satanic, the Nigerian Baptist Convention has said.
The social media has recently gone viral with news that the CAN President, who doubles as the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, was favourably disposed to the decision.
The Convention spoke in a statement made available to journalists by its Public Relation Officer, Pastor Eben Durodola, read in parts, “The attention of the Nigerian Baptist Convention has been drawn to a false report going viral on social media and online news concerning a comment ascribed to the President of our Convention and Christian Association of Nigeria, Reverend Supo Ayokunle.
“An online news platform reported that the CAN endorses the execution of a Kano singer by Sharia law.
“It should be noted that the President of CAN, who is also the head of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, did not grant any interview with any media organisation by giving endorsement to the death sentence.
“He will not do anything against the wishes of Nigerians and the stand of Christians in Nigeria.”
It condemned what it described as “the satanic news item (that) the enemy of peace in Nigeria are circulating. The Nigerian Baptist Convention also join other well-meaning Nigerians to call on the authority concerned to exercise restrain in the execution of the singer.”
The statement urged Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to exercise his prerogative of mercy over the young singer, adding, “President Ayokunle has been consistent in his call for a just and peaceful society where the right of everybody will be respected and to put an end to wanton killings.
It added, “Nigerians are urged to disregard the infamous and satanic publication. The Nigerian Baptist Convention will continue to promote peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.”
