AKINWALE ABOLUWADE
The President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, has joined a growing list of prominent voices mourning the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin. In a tribute that echoed both reverence and sorrow, Bishop Wale Oke described the late monarch as a beacon of humility, wisdom, and grace.
In a statement released on Monday from Ibadan, Bishop Wale Oke, who also leads Sword of the Spirit Ministries and founded Precious Cornerstone University, offered his condolences to the Olubadan Royal Family, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Government, and the entire Ibadan community.
The cleric’s message, titled “Condolences on the Passage of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland,” portrayed the late traditional ruler as more than a king—he was, according to Bishop Wale Oke, a father to all.
“His passing marks the end of a significant era in the history of Ibadan and its traditional institution,” he said, adding that the monarch’s reign, although brief, brought renewed strength and dignity to the ancient throne.
The Bishop reflected on Kabiyesi’s enduring virtues—his commitment to peace, inclusive leadership, and deep compassion for his people. “He was a devoted Christian and a leader whose quiet strength and generosity defined his time on the throne,” Wale Oke said.
Notably, the cleric recalled the monarch’s prior service to the nation as a military officer during the Nigerian Civil War—describing it as a testimony of his patriotism and unwavering dedication to national unity.
According to Bishop Wale Oke, the brief reign of Oba Olakulehin saw visible progress in the traditional institution and development across Ibadanland. “His leadership will remain a reference point for generations to come,” he noted.
He ended the message with a prayer: “May God comfort the royal family and all who mourn his loss. Kabiyesi has departed, but his legacy will continue to live on in the heart of Ibadan. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Adieu, Kabiyesi.”
Oba Olakulehin was born on July 5, 1935, and officially received his staff of office from Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024. His journey to the throne followed a distinguished career in public service and years of ascension through the Balogun line of Ibadan’s chieftaincy system.
With his demise, the process of selecting a new Olubadan is expected to commence, following the city’s unique succession tradition—an enduring symbol of Ibadan’s heritage and continuity.
