Late Maj. Gen. Basiru Akanni Jinadu has been described as a distinguished and detribalised Nigerian who served his fatherland forthrightly while alive.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, paid tribute to the memory of the late military brass in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday, at the Military Cemetery, Jericho, Ibadan.
The COAS, who was represented at the interment of late Jinadu, former General Officer Commanding, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, by the General Officer Commanding, 2 Div., Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Maj. Gen. Aminu Chinade, commiserated with the widow, Mrs. Rebecca Ayinke, and the children of the deceased.
He said that the late Maj. Gen., who hailed from Ogun State, was “a distinguished gentleman senior officer who served the Nigerian Army and the nation meritoriously in various capacities. He was no doubt a detribalised Nigerian who served his fatherland diligently with unblemished record.
“He was a forthright gentleman and a professional Military Officer with remarkable achievements.
“Specifically, he was one time an Instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy and a General Staff Officer Grade 2 training at Armed Forces Command Staff College, Jaji. He was Sector Commander at the Headquarters, Nigerian Contingent United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.
“He was also a Military Officer at the United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group, as well as Commanding Officer, 222 Battalion; Director of Training at Headquarters National Guard; and later a General Officer Commanding at the Headquarters 82 Division, Enugu.
“He finally served as the Chief of Army Standard and Evaluation before his retirement from the Nigerian Army.”
He added that the deceased lived “an impactful and fulfilled life, stressing that “his demise must certainly be a difficult moment for you, friends, well wishers, the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the nation at large.”
Maj. Gen. Jinadu died in Ibadan on September 24, 2022 at age 72.
His burial was graced by Pastor John Oluwapemi as well as members of the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers Association, led by its ex-National President, Maj. Gen. A. A. Mshelbwala.
