The Provost, College of Social and Management Science, Bowen University, Prof. Sunday Owolabi, has urged the accounting and finance experts in the country to hold on to their professional ethics for integrity and to save the land from the hazards of corruption.
Owolabi spoke during the 2021 International Conference on Accounting and Finance organised by the Accounting and Finance Programme of the University, the BOWEN University Newsletter signed by Toba Adaramola, Head, Information and Public Relations, read.
The University don urged members of the accounting profession to protect their integrity as corruption became commonplace in the society.
To rid the society of the vice, he advised accountants and finance officers to collaborate with other professionals in the field.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Conference Steering Committee, Dr Ezekiel Oyerogba, said that the event, with the theme, ‘Accounting and Finance profession – fostering sustainability initiatives,’ was not only relevant but timely.
Oyerogba stated that sustainability remained one of the key realities confronting the global economy in view of the COVID-19 pandemic that cut down the operations of many companies, thereby leading to decrease in revenue.
According to the don, 53 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference covering virtually all-important aspects in accounting and finance discipline.
The keynote speaker at the conference, Prof. Muhammed Akaro Mainoma, who was theVice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and the former President, Association of National Accountants, in his paper titled, ‘Understanding our time: How sustainability is changing our understanding,’ described sustainability as a concept that changed perceptions on issues of economy, social justice and the environment.
Mainoma stressed the need to appreciate sustainability by the various challenges being faced due to increasing poverty, unemployment, income inequality, political unrest, global health threats, humanitarian crises, terrorism, racism, depletion of natural resources, and climate change which negatively affected the economy.
He urged all to see sustainability from a broad perspective, away from a simple perspective but as a blend of economic, social and environmental issues while improving and extending current state of things for future generations using a long-term thinking approach.
While declaring the conference open, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor, Bowen University, Iwo, who was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatosin Atobatele, congratulated the organisers of the programme.
In attendance at the event are Prof. Solabomi Ajibolade, Head, Department of Accounting, University of Lagos; Prof. R.O. Salawu, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Prof. Kighir Emmanuel, Federal University, Dutse-ma; Mr Emmanuel Adegun, Adeleke University, Ede; and Prof. Olayinka Adenikinju, among others.
