Sympathisers were in tears on Friday as the body of Richard Gbadebo, a 300-level student of University of Ibadan were buried at the Sango Cemetery, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Oyo Reporters gathered that the deceased was buried around 1:30pm in a white casket.
The occasion was witnessed by family members, members of the human rights organisation, labour movement and staff of the company where Gbadebo was working.
Gbadebo’s burial sermon was delivered by Pastor Theophilus Obafemi of Victorious Life in Jesus, Apata, Ibadan.
In his sermon, the cleric said though Richard died at a young age, he died in Christ. He added that Richard had gone to rest with the Lord.
The man of God urged the people to do good while on earth in order to find rest with their maker.
Kayode Martins, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, in an address delivered on the occasion, decried the exploitation of Nigerian workers by foreign companies.
He called for the investigation and sanction of erring employers of labour, saying, “This will serve as a deterrent to others. The way and manner by which they enslave our people is unfortunate and disturbing.
“Government should checkmate these people and let them realise that the life of every worker is paramount.”
The Oyo State Government has expressed its resolve to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of Gbadebo.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Bashir Olanrewaju, on Thursday, said it had begun a safety audit of the factory and would ensure that necessary sanctions were meted out on the company upon completion of investigations.
Oyo Reporters stated that the father of the deceased, Mr. Shola Gbadebo, asked for the CCTV footage of how his son died.
