There was excitement in the air at Bowen University, Iwo, on Thursday as the management of the university offered automatic employment to five of its best graduating nursing students.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Joshua Ogunwole, made the disclosure on Thursday at the 2nd Nursing Science induction and award ceremony for the 39 inductees.

Ogunwole said that the five students scored 70 per cent and above in their examinations, adding that the job offer was a way to further motivate them as well as other students of the institution to do better.

Those given automatic employment by the university are Abisola Betiku, the best graduating student; Abidat Adeagbo-Mustapha; Adedolapo Adekanbi;Joy Aladegbami and Damilola Erinfolami.

The VC, in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, said the university’s gesture was to retain its best because of its plan to start post-graduate programme soon.

He said that aside the employment, the university would give them scholarships for their Masters’ programme.

Ogunwole said, “We have given them automatic employment in order to retain them. A wise institution should do everything to retain its best. We want to start Masters’ programme and they will be among the first set of students.

“We will give them scholarships for Masters and encourage them to go for PhD. It’s is not easy to come by PhD in Nursing but that is what Bowen is aiming at.”

The Head, Department of Nursing, University of Ibadan, Prisca Adejumo, urged the inductees to be technologically literate, as that would help them to be their best in the 21st Century where they would operate.

Adejumo said, “You need to upscale your capacity and join others in finding solutions to the problems of the world. You can’t afford not to be combative. You need to collaborate with other professionals.

“You cannot afford to be satisfied with knowing how to operate microsoft word, you need more than that. Be technologically literate.”
