The Senate, University of Ibadan, on Monday appointed an Ibadan man, Prof. Adebola Ekanola, as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university after the end of the five-year- tenure of Prof. Idowu Olayinka.
Prof. Ekanola’s appointment was in line with the recent directive by the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission.
The acting VC is from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts of UI. His appointment followed the logjam that trailed the selection of Prof. Olayinka’s successor who was due to bow out of office on Monday.
The Ministry of Education directed the Senate of the university to appoint a don in the acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive VC.
The process leading to his appointment took close to two hours with the Senate calling for nominations and seconding of nominations from members.
Those nominated for the exalted position include the Current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Ekanola; Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Innovation and Strategic Partnerships; Prof. A. Oluleye, former Dean, Fauclty of Technology, Prof. Adigun Agbaje, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic andProf. Gbemisola Oke, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic.
Ekanola was said to have polled 275 votes to emerge as winner; Prof. Adeyemo had 13 votes; Profem. Oluleye, 80 votes; Prof. Agbaje,15 votes; while Prof. Oke polled 14 votes.
The Senate ratified the results and immediately adjourned its meeting.
