There was jubilation across Osun State in the early hours of today (Sunday) as the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, the winner of the Osun governorship election.
Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, who doubled as the Returning Officer for the election disclosed that Adeleke got a total of 403,371 votes while the incumbent, Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, got 375,027 votes.
Ogundipe said, “I declare Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen, on behalf of the chairman of INEC, of the PDP, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected.”
The total votes recorded by the INEC showed that the PDP won 17 of the 30 local government areas of the state, while the APC won 13.
Opposition PDP won in Ede North, Ede South, Ifelodun, Boluwaduro, Egbedore, Odo Otin, Osogbo, Ila, Atakumosa West, Olorunda, Ilesa West, Obokun, Oriade, Orolu, Ife North, Irepodun, and Ejigbo council areas, while the APC won in Boripe, Ilesa East, Ayedire, Ifedayo, Ife Central, Ayedaade, Iwo, Olaoluwa, Isokan, Atakumosa East, Irewole, Ife South, and Ife East council areas.
Earlier before the winner of the poll was declared, there was wild jubilation in the Situation Room of the PDP.
Some residents of the state began to celebrate before the final results of the election were announced.
No fewer than 15 political parties partook in the election, but it was largely seen as a contest between the PDP and the APC.
The poll was alleged to have been characterised by massive vote-buying by some political parties.
This drew reactions from different quarters.
After the election, APC members accused the PDP of malpractices in the exercise while some people joked that it was a case of balance of terror.
