The Kaaro Oojiire Omo Oodua Foundation (KOOOF) has condemned a recent video by Nigerian singer, Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, accusing him of making defamatory and disrespectful statements about Queen Dammy, a former wife of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Asiwaju Olú Mayungbe, KOOOF described Portable’s claims as baseless, offensive, and an affront to Yoruba culture and heritage. Queen Dammy was estranged from the Alaafin before his passing in 2022.
Asiwaju Mayungbe expressed outrage over Portable’s comments, which he said insulted the revered memory of the late monarch and his family.
“The statements made by Portable have not only disrespected the late Yoruba royal father but have also brought dishonor to the cultural and traditional values upheld by the Yoruba people,” Mayungbe said.
KOOOF has demanded that Portable issue an unreserved apology to the Yoruba community, including traditional rulers, the Oyomesi council, the Alaafin’s chiefs, and the family of the late king. The foundation also called for the immediate removal of the controversial video from all of Portable’s social media platforms.
“Failure to comply with these demands may result in further action. Portable’s remarks have the potential to incite unrest, particularly in the Southwestern region of Nigeria,” the statement warned.
KOOOF further urged the Nigerian authorities to hold Portable accountable for his comments, which they described as malicious and damaging to Yoruba cultural heritage.
The foundation reiterated its commitment to safeguarding and promoting Yoruba traditions and values, emphasizing the importance of respecting the legacies of revered cultural icons like the late Alaafin.
