AKINWALE ABOLUWADE
The Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress, LPPMC, has tasked the leadership of the party (LP) to ensure that Congresses are held at its national, state, local and ward levels in line with the tenets of true democracy.
The LPPMC made the call at a press conference that was jointly addressed by Dexter ‘Femi Akin-Alamu, National Spokesperson, and Folu Bademosi, South-West Coordinator of the group held at the Board Room of The Dexterity Group, Ring Road, Ibadan, on Thursday.
Akin-Alamu said that “We are totally committed to the prosperity of the Labour Party. Our great party is facing several challenges some of which are public while others are not.
“These challenges, largely attributed to lack of transparent and effective leadership at various levels of the party, have led to factions that threaten to divide us. LPPMC is not a faction. It pledges allegiance to the Labour Party, not any individual or group. We are here to protect the best interests of our party, ensuring its growth and unity.
“LPPMC believes in a brighter future for Nigeria where the people play a pivotal role in nation-building. The Labour Party has been chosen as the vehicle for change and we are committed to nurturing this awareness for the betterment of our nation. We are here to reposition our party, making it a party of relevance in Nigeria.
“Over the past two years, our party has experienced a significant surge in membership as individuals across the nation joined in the common desire to shape a new Nigeria. However, as we engage with leaders at the national, state, local government and ward levels, it has become apparent that not all share the same vision for a new Nigeria that many of the new members passionately advocate for.
“This congress will provide an opportunity for both new and longstanding members to actively participate in selecting leaders who align with the aspirations of a new Nigeria. By embracing this democratic reform, we aim to foster unity, inclusivity and accountability within our party.”
On the February presidential elections in Nigeria, he said, “We stand resolute in our commitment to a better Nigeria and a stronger Labour Party. We believe in justice, transparency and inclusiveness as the bedrock of our democracy.
“The recent Supreme Court ruling on the February presidential elections in Nigeria has left many questioning the delivery of justice. While we, the LPPMC, strongly disagree with the court’s decision and believe that justice has not been served to the good people of Nigeria, we acknowledge the supremacy of the constitution and respect the final say of the Supreme Court in such matters.
“We will continue to engage with the democratic process, upholding the principles of the rule of law and the constitution. Our primary concern is the well-being of our great nation, and we remain committed to ensuring that credible individuals with character are elected into office in subsequent elections and more importantly in 2027.
Bademosi explained that the LPPMC is committed to promoting transparency, accountability, equity and inclusiveness within the party by supporting credible officers and candidates at all levels of government in a bid to build a better country.
“What we are doing basically is to rebuild the foundation. The Labour Party had always been around, but it had not been as grounded as it was in the last election. A lot of people used the platform to bring their aspirations to fruition. Now, by God’ss grace, Labour Party is the third with largest members at the National Assembly.
“We, new members of the party, find out that the foundation that we met is not strong enough to carry the structure but we want to ensure that the structure we want to put on it now is long lasting.”
Asked if there is hope of resolving the crises within the party ahead of the elections in the future, Bademosi said, “Definitely, there is a lot of hope.
