Nigerian women have been urged to be actively involved in politics by taking part in the ongoing voter registration exercise and by mobilizing support for female candidates.
The call was made by the Central Working Committee of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists during its meeting on Saturday, May 28, at the Osborn La Palm Hotel, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The forum stressed the need for massive mobilization of support for female politicians showing interest in elective positions at the state and federal levels towards achieving the 35 per cent Affirmative Action on women inclusion in governance
The meeting, which was presided over by the National President of NAWOJ, Ladi Bala, x-rayed issues concerning the association and the state of the nation.
The communique issued at the end of the meeting, signed by Helen Udofa, National Secretary of NAWOJ, lauded Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State for the development being recorded in the state under his government.
It urges the Federal Government to, as a matter of national interest, expedite action on the release of the remaining abducted passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna bound train that are still in captivity with terrorists.
It tasked Nigerians to learn to understand, tolerate and appreciate each other more and live in peace and harmony with one another and avoid provocation and intolerance irrespective of religion, tribe and ethnic backgrounds for sustainable national development.
It also stressed the need for citizens to pay attention to issues of security just as it urged journalists to be more conscious of their personal safety in the cause of carrying out their tasks, particularly as the 2023 general elections draw near.
