Oba Oluremi Obayomi, the Elese of Ilese Ijebu, has tasked Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, alongside the indegenes of the town to show greater commitment to the socio-economic and infrastructural development of the community.
Oba Obayomi spoke during the 2024 Ilese Day celebration held at the playground of the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Applied Sciences in Ilese where he pronounced Otunba Kunle Kalejaye, SAN, the Asiwaju for Ilese Ijebu.
Kalejaye is the Chairman of the Ilese Development Council.
Among others, the occasion was graced by Senator Daniel, traditional rulers and other dignitaries in Ijebu land.
The king said in his address, “I am very delighted to say that ‘Ilese Day’ is now a very remarkable event in Ijebu land and within and outside Ogun State as exemplified in the impressive performance of the carnival group.
“This will continue to give us peace and happiness, and full participation of youths from diverse economic and socio-cultural backgrounds in the community.
“We have environmental problems in this community, and it is flooding. Our dear former governor whom we fondly call, OGD, we believe that you will use your position as a Senator in Abuja to assist us on this problem.
“Our school here, the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Applied Sciences, also needs your intervention in the area of infrastructural development. We believe you can do this.
“I also want to use this occasion to reiterate my clarion call to all Ilese sons and daughters to key into the lofty ideals of our developmental objectives of IDC for the general wellbeing of our community.
“I commend Otunba Kunle Kalejaye, SAN for his exemplary leadership role as the Chairman of the Ilese Development Council. He has been doing wonderfully well over the years. I know he is Asiwaju Onigbagbo in his church, but today, I confer on him the title of ‘Asiwaju of Ilese Ijebu.’ As from today, he is the Asiwaju of Ilese Ijebu.”
In his speech, Daniel stated that “I am a member of the Senate Committee on secondary and tertiary education, and also part of the TETFUND machinery. So, I am going to sit down with Kabiyesi and Asiwaju Kunle Kalejaye, SAN, (Chairman, Governing Board of the Polytechnic), so that we will also ensure that organizers of TETFUND can have an impact in this institution. I am part of you. You can take it for granted that we will do the needful.”
The former governor said he was not unaware of the environmental challenges besetting the community, noting that “I remember when I was governor in 2003, the road to Ilese was impassable. It was one of the roads we quickly put OGROMA to do some palliatives at that time. We have been able to put some things together on this road, and soon, you will see its manifestation.”
Events held during the Elese Festival included the 2024 Ilese Day Beauty Pageant competition in which Olooto Eniola, a graduate of Pharmacology from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, emerged the overall winner. Ariyo Oluwaferanmi of Lagos State University took second position while Ogunjere Omolara of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, came third.
Emiola Samuel Orenugba came first as the best cook, beating four female chefs in the Ikokore cooking competition.
