The New Nigeria People’s Party has said that in the 2023 general elections, a ‘ballot box coup’ remains the only option through which the country can be liberated from the brink of collapse.
The party alleged the political leaders of being responsible for the current socio-political and economic crises into which the country was being drifted.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, Olamiposi Oginni, at the launch of the South-West Support Group of the party, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, stated the need for what he described as ‘a necessary electoral change.’
Oginni alleged that the two major political parties in the country (the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress) had failed to give the citizens the anticipated democratic dividends.
To this end, he said that the emergence of a purpose-driven government that would be committed to the welfare of the citizens would be midwifed by a new political party.
He said, “My idea of ballot box coup means using the ballot box to effect electoral change that would bring a complete departure from what we have been doing electorally since 1999.
“Only a mad man would be doing the same thing over a period of time and expect a different result. Unless Nigerians collectively decide to effect a meaningful change electorally come 2023, the hope of having a change from the present quagmire would remain a mirage.”
Expressing worries on the level of insecurity in the land, he urged the FG to show greater commitment to security of lives and property of the citizens.
Oginni, who challenged Nigerians to take their destinies in their hands, said that “Experience of over two decades of democracy has shown us how right or wrong we have been in our choices of parties and leaders. The ball will be in our court again in 2023.
‘’We (the NNPP) are offering ourselves as better and credible alternatives to the two major political parties that have dominated the political landscape since 1999 with their abysmal performance, but, we cannot force ourselves on the people.”
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Fred Akpokia, who stood in for the National Chairman, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, on the occasion, said that subsequent elections would be keenly contested by the party at all levels, starting with the Abuja Municipal Area Council poll holding next year February.
Alhaji Wasiu Adebanjo, South-West Coordinator of the party, alongside coordinators from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states, was presented with a certificate.
Among those who were present on the occasion are the national leaders of the party, Gen. Olayokun Oladipupo (retd.) and Boladale Olorunniisomo.
