The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun; alongside Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State are billed to grace the maiden and second graduation ceremonies of the Dominican University, Ibadan.
This disclosure was made by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Hyginus Ekwuazi, during a press conference held at the premises of the university on Monday.
Ekwuazi said that Governor Makinde would be the Chief Guest at the Convocation while the Ooni and the Olubadan are to be Special Guests of Honour on the occasion.
The professor of Broadcasting and Film, said that Dominican University, Ibadan, would hold the events by 11am at its Samonda Campus on Saturday, December 10, 2022.
Activities marking the Convocation ceremonies would kick off with a Foundation Lecture to be delivered by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University, Chief Anthony Idigbe, (SAN), on Friday, December 9, 2022.
The lecture, title, ‘An Impact – The vision for Dominican University, Ibadan,’ is scheduled to begin by 2pm at the Tom and Carolyn Walker Hall. Immediately after this, the Proprietor would commission the PS 133 Water Fountain at the Samonda Campus of the institution.
The university would hold the combined Convocation ceremonies for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions by 11am at the Samonda Campus of the university on December 10, 2022.
The lecture, ‘Let your degree count, would be delivered by Mr. Peter Amangbo, Chairman, Board of Directors, Globus Bank Limited and member of the Governing Council of the university.
Very Rev. Fr. Modestus Ngwu, the Chancellor, who would preside at the convocation ceremonies as well as other assemblies of the university for the conferment of degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards, would present degrees and awards to the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 graduands of the university.
It was learnt that the institution would turn out a total of 47 graduands for the 2020/2021 and 49 for the 2021/2022 session.
The VC said, “Out of the 47 graduands for the 2020/2021 academic session, six graduands are in the First Class Honours category; 22 in the Second Class Honours (Upper Division) category; and 19 graduands are in the Second Class Honours (Lower Division) category.
“In the 2021/2022 academic session, out of the 49 graduands, seven are in the First Class Honours category; 32 in the Second Class Honours (Upper Division) category; and nine graduands, in the Second Class Honours (Lower Division) category.”
Nduka Onyedika from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies with CGPA of 4.76 got Best Overall Graduating Student Award as well as Best Graduating Student, Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences.
Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Science would be given to David Okechukwu of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences with CGPA of 4.12, while Best Male Graduating Student still goes to Onyedika of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
Nofisat lyanda of the Department of Social and Management Sciences with CGPA of 4.59 clinched the Best Female Graduating Student Award.
For the 2021/2022 Session, the Best Overall Graduating Student is Miss Udenkwo Chinedum Mary of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, with CGPA of 4.83, while the Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Humanities, Social and Management Sciences, is Rev. Sr. Justina Chinonso Ezike of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, with CGPA of 4.75
Udenkwo Chinedum Mary, with CGPA of 4.83 is the Best Graduating Student, Faculty of Science. Best Male Graduating Student is George Fordjour of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies with CGPA of 4.71, while Best Female Graduating Student is Udenkwo Chinedum Mary of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences with CGPA of 4.83.
The Dominican University Ibadan, first in African, was licensed for operation on November 22, 2016, under the proprietorship of Very Rev. Fr Charles Ukwe with Prior Provincial Archbishop Felix Alaba Job, as distinguished Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The former Anambra State Governor and Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Prof. Anthony Akinwale is the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, the Dominican University which commenced academic activities on October 3, 2017.
Dwelling on how the institution started, the VC said that the university commenced operation in 2017 with Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science. “The University began with five programmes: B.A. Philosophy, B.Sc. Economics, B.Sc. Accounting, B.Sc. Business Administration, and B.Sc. Computer Science. Subsequently, the Dominican University commenced admission of students into B.Sc. Mass Communication and B.A. Christian Religious Studies in 2018. In 2021, the university began the B.Sc. Chemistry programme.

Fr Modestus Ngwu OP as Prior Provincial and Proprietor of the University, Chief Anthony Idigbe, (SAN) as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi as Pro-Chancellor and Prof. Hyginus Ekwuazi as acting Vice Chancellor, the Dominican University is poised to race to greater heights in the pursuit of excellence,” he said.
