Nwachukwu Enwonwu, the new Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, on Tuesday, said some suspected hoodlums had been arrested in connection with the murder of Barakat Bello and Azeezat Shomuyiwa.
The duo were reportedly raped and murdered in their homes in separate incidents in different parts of Ibadan, the state capital, recently.
Enwonwu, in an interview on Tuesday, said the police personnel at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, had intensified efforts on the matter.
But, he did not state the actual number of the arrested suspects.
He said it would be too hasty to conclude that the killings of the ladies were ritualistic. He stressed that the outcome of police investigation would reveal the motive behind the hoodlum’s action.
He said, “In view of the rate and pattern of crime in the state, the security apparatuses have been restructured and more officers and men have been deployed to remote parts of the state.”
The CP used the opportunity to appeal to parents to ensure proper custody of their children and wards, with special reference to the female children in the light of the recent development.
Meanwhile, news went viral on Tuesday evening that Shomuyiwa’s remains had been buried according to Islamic rite at Akinyele area of Ibadan on Tuesday barring police investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, Olugbenga Fadeyi, denied the knowledge of the burial stating that police investigation had been stepped up in order to unravel the facts behind the crime.
