Police in Oyo State, on Friday, said that it had begun a probe into the fatal clash between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in Ibadan, the state capital.
The clash, on Thursday, at the Ile-tuntun area, Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, left three people dead.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said during a call-in programme on Fresh FM Ibadan, that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department was already investigating the incident.
The PPRO said, “The unfortunate incident did occur yesterday, and as we speak, investigation has commenced into unraveling the root cause. Oyo State is the cradle of sophistication and the world depends on Oyo for a lot of things. We should not continue in the trajectory known for hooliganism.
“Elections will come and go but people will be there.”
Osifeso advised politicians and other stakeholders in the state to prevail on their followers and wards against resulting to violence.
It was gathered that fight broke out as APC members were holding meeting at the Iyana Court, Ile-tuntun party office, Ibadan as a group of PDP members passing by reportedly incited the APC loyalists by hauling varying objects at them.
An eyewitness was quoted as saying, “The PDP got angry and when (they) retaliated, a leading member of the party and a member of the House of Representatives picked a gun and fired gunshots at the APC members. It led to a free for all.”
