The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State command, Nwachukwu Enwonwu, has disclosed that an Inspector and one other police officer have been arrested in connection with the escape of Sunday Shodipe, a suspected serial killer, from the station.
The police in the state disclosed on Sunday via a telegraph message that the 19-year-old suspected killer, who is on trial, had escaped from the custody.
According to the CP, the two police officers, who were arrested, are currently facing orderly room trial.
The CP spoke during a visit by some members of the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, led by its Chairman, Ademola Babalola, to the Eleyele Police Headquarters, Ibadan.
The NUJ inquired about how the alleged killer escaped from their custody.
The CP said investigation was on to determine their level of involvement adding that there would be no cover up.
The incident has attracted public outcry, but Enwonwu said, “We will do everything to ensure that Oyo State is crime free.”
Earlier in his remarks, the NUJ Chairman urged the CP to ensure that his men respect the ethics of the profession.
He said, “We are disturbed with the news of the escape of Sunday Shodipe. That is why we have come here. Police custody should be the safest place to keep a suspect in Nigeria.”
