The University College Hospital, Ibadan has confirmed that Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe is dead.
The professor of medicine was said to have passed on in the late afternoon, on Monday.
The late Akinkugbe, foremost Nigerian professor of Medicine, died at the age of 87 after brief illness.
Oyo Reporters gathered that the late professor had been sick for some time before he succumbed to death at the Ibadan residence of his son.
Toye Akinrinola, Public Relations Officer, UCH, said, “It is true that he is dead. We learnt that he had been sick for some time. He died about late afternoon today (Monday).
“His death came as a shock and he would be sorely missed for his immense value and contribution.”
Professor Akinkugbe gained admission into the University College, Ibadan, in 1951 and later became a lectured in leading universities, including the University of London, Balliol College, University of Oxford England and Harvard Medical School Boston, USA.
He was Chairman, Vesta Healthcare Partners and Chairman of the Presidential Projects Implementation Committee on refurbishing of Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria.
The deceased was also chairman, Board of Management of UCH, and one-time Chairman, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
He also served as Pro-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt; was a former Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; a former Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin; and a former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ibadan.
Akinkugbe had practised medicine for 60 years. During the period, he pioneered the establishment of two critical clinics, one in hypertension and the other in renal disorders at the UCH, Ibadan.
He established a private hospital named the Ibadan Hypertension Clinic, which he managed for 20 years.
