The former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), University of Ibadan, Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto, has formally joined the race to fill the position as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the Premier University.

Opinion poll shows that Aderinto, current Head, Department of Sociology, UI, is one of the leading candidates for the job.

Other stop contenders for the seat are Prof. Kayode Odebowale of the Faculty of Science; Prof. Remi Raji-Oyelade of the Faculty of Arts; Prof. Emiola Olapade-Olaopa, Provost of the College of Medicine; Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose; and Prof. George Ademowo, Faculty of Basic Medical Science.

Whoever emerges as next VC would succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka.

The HOD, after submitting his application for the position of VC, on Tuesday, broke the news on the Faculty of Social Sciences platform.

He wrote, “Dear Colleagues, I wish to inform you that I have just submitted my application for the position of the VC of our University. I seek your support in prayers. God bless you.”

Whereas academic activities had been paralysed for some time in the University due to the ongoing strike, political meetings and mobilisation for the plum job had commenced underground.

Aderinto was at different times the Examinations Officer; Sub-dean; Dean, Postgraduate School; and Director of Special Duties in the office of the Vice-Chancellor.

No fewer than eight candidates are vying for the top position in the university.
