Oyo State Government has warned headteachers of public primary schools in the state against non-compliance with the COVID-19 safety guidelines as primary and secondary schools resume across the state, on Monday.
The Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, expressed his misgivings on the issue on Monday, during the commencement of inspection of schools by the board in Ibadan, the state capital.
The Oyo State Government trained a total of 2,454 head-teachers on guidelines for COVID-19 prevention protocols ahead of resumption of schools in the state recently.
Adeniran, who led some officials from the Standard and Quality Assurance Department of SUBEB on inspection of schools, frowned against the poor compliance rate of teachers and pupils in some schools.
There was high rate of compliance in private schools across the state, but most students and teachers in most of the public schools failed to use facemasks.
Many of the staff and students in some of the public schools also flouted the social distancing rules.
Adeniran said, “In some schools, the compliance level was not encouraging, while the team did not meet teachers in others. Pupils did not comply with extant guidelines of social distancing and use of nose-masks.”
However, the team applauded the compliance level of some teachers and pupils to resumption guidelines.
Adeniran said, “We want to ensure total commitment to safety in our schools. We can not afford to endanger the lives of our pupils and staff members.”
He urged the headteachers of public primary schools to ensure full compliance with the guidelines, saying, “While some schools are serious with the guidelines, some were lackadaisical about the issue of COVID-19 but have been called to order.”
The statewide schools’ monitoring is expected to be extended to other parts of the state in the course of the week.
