A man named Kareem Taiwo has been arrested by security operatives in Ibadan for attempting to defraud some residents of the state who wanted to register for recruitment into the Amotekun Corps.
The suspect was arrested on Monday after failed attempts to deceive some prospective candidates at the Adamasingba Stadium venue of the Amotekun recruitment.
It was learnt that the management of the Amotekun outfit later got wind of the attempted scam. He was apprehended at 11:45am and handed over to the security agents for prosecution.
When asked of what led him to the act, the suspect, who claimed to be a trader, said, “It was the work of the devil. Only one person contacted me through my number.”
In his reaction, Gen. Kunle Toogun (retd.) Chairman, Oyo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps), urged members of the public to be wary of fraudsters in their quest to enlist into the Amotekun Corps.
According to Toogun, screening of applicants into the corps, which started from Ibadan, would be extended to other parts of the state.
He added that “Those that missed screening have been called to join others for fresh screening.
This will pave the way for equal participation, although we have encountered so many challenges since we started. Some came with forged certificates and documents. You have seen the one that just happened, but we are unrelenting.
“The screening will continue with the less cities, the Oke-Ogun zones one and two, Ido and Ibarapa among others. We want to make the exercise as open and less cumbersome to applicants as possible. The governor has demanded for openness and exactly that we are giving.”
The screening exercise commenced last week with applicants presenting their certificates for screening.
