Indication has emerged that suspected terrorists and kidnappers in the land might be rejecting the old naira notes for ransom as the Central Bank of Nigeria changes some of the features on the naira notes.
President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to unveil the new naira notes: the N1,000, N500 and the N200 denominations today.
In a particular instance, Oyo Reporters learnt that some bandits who abducted a man, a woman and two children in Kolo village, Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, demanded N10m ransom from family members of their victims.
A source was quoted as saying that some inhabitants of the village were trying to raise the money in a bid to secure the release of the victims.
The man was reported to have said, “As we were trying to gather the money demanded by the terrorists, they sent another message this morning that they would not collect old naira notes.
“They said they would keep the abducted persons in their camps until the release of the new naira notes in December.”
SP Mohammed Shehu, Police Public Relations Officer, and Ibrahim Dosara, the Commissioner for Information in the state, could not be reached for comments on the occurence.
