For the Old Students’ Association of the United Christian Secondary School, Omi Adio, Ibadan, Saturday, December 18, was a memorable day in history.
Forty-five years after the school was founded, the old students turned back to identify with it.
It was an opportunity to reflect on the good old days and tell stories of what life has been for them so far ever since they launched out into the world.
According to many of them, in tandem with the motto of their illustrious alma mater that reads, ‘No thorns no crown,’ experiences of life have proved to them that in life, without pain, there is no gain.
The results of over four decades and half were evident on them with some having become academics at professorial cadre; clergymen, administrators, doctors, teachers, business men and women, and captains of industry.
As a mark of reference to school, the old students, including Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, a lawmaker and former Commissioner for Education in Oyo State; Adeola Isiaka, former Minority Leader, Oyo State House of Assembly; and the alumni Secretary, Prince Folorunso; all appeared in their school uniform to mark the occasion.
One of the old students of the school, Rev. Adegboyega Abifarin, said, “We had a reunion of my secondary school yesterday, Saturday, December 18. It was first of its kind after 45 years of its establishment.”
An old student (preferred anonymity), said, “The 18th of December, 2021 will remain fresh and a memorable day when the alumni of United Christian Secondary School, Omi-Adio, Ibadan met for its first reunion after 45 years of the school’s establishment.
“The reunion, which brought many old students together, was characterised by reminiscence of good old days. Some old students dressed in the school uniform which also added flavour to the events of the day.”
In his address, the guest speaker, Prof. Oyeniyi, a former teacher of the school, now a lecturer at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, admonished the alumni to be more united in order to develop the school and be of help to individual members.
In his own lecture, a former student, Dr. Soji Akande, admonished his colleagues to be mindful of their health status. He spoke on hypertension and diabetes, and the need to check their blood pressure and sugar level regularly, stressing that hypertension is a silent killer.
Among the old students in attendance, who also appeared in school uniform were Asimiyu Towolawi, the Alumni President; Alhaji Lukman Ladipo, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Oyo State Civil Service; Chairman and Alumni BOT, Alhaji Adeola Isiaka, former Chairman, Ido Local Government, and Minority Leader, Oyo State House of Assembly, and a host of others who are also doing well in their various fields of endeavours.
