AKINWALE ABOLUWADE

Moshood Onifade Akinwande, President of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria, SURCON, has described his appointment by President Bola Tinubu as a pure act of God.

Akinwande, who hails from Oyo town, said his appointment was not as a result of his power or ingenuity, as there were more than six thousand registered surveyors in Nigeria who could have been considered for the position.

He spoke on Saturday at a luncheon organised in his honour by the 1981 Set of the Alumni of Ladigbolu Grammar School, Oyo.

Akinwande was inaugurated as President of the 10th Surveyors Council of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The SURCON President, who retired in 2018 as Director of Research, Planning and Documentation in the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation, expressed gratitude to God and President Tinubu for considering him worthy of the appointment.

He said, “Without God, there is nothing anybody can do. He has seen me thus far, and I don’t take God for granted. Without God, I cannot be where I am today. I am not the best. We have over 6,000 registered surveyors in the country. So, why me, if not God.”

Akinwande also thanked his former schoolmates for the honour, saying he was delighted that his 1981 colleagues came together to celebrate him.

He was flanked by his wife, Mrs Oluwakemi Akinwande, and the President-General of the Ladigbolu Grammar School Old Students Association, Pastor Funmilayo Ojoawo.

The luncheon was attended by the SURCON Registrar, Surveyor Olakunle Ogungbemiro; Chairman of the Oyo State Institution of Surveyors, Surveyor Ajibade Bashiru Bolanle; and former Registrar of the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, Mr Kola Oyedele.

Speaking at the event, SURCON Registrar, Surveyor Ogungbemiro, said Akinwande’s appointment brought relief to him after years of uncertainty over the council.

He said the council had not been functional for about three years before Akinwande’s appointment, adding that the new president had been hardworking since assuming office.

Ogungbemiro said, “With the appointment of Akinwande, I have been having good sleep because since three years past when the Council was not functional, I had been working round the clock until Akinwande’s appointment.”

He added that he could now direct complaints about the council’s activities to the president, describing Akinwande as “very wonderful and hardworking.”

In his keynote address, President of the 1981 Set, Mr Segun Oke, congratulated Akinwande, describing his elevation as a testament to his hard work, integrity, competence and dedication to professional excellence.

Oke charged the SURCON President to excel in office and uphold the values associated with the 1981 Set and the Ladigbolu family.

He said, “Go forth and raise the Ladigbolu banner high at the Surveyors Council of Nigeria.”

Other well-wishers who congratulated Akinwande and urged him to excel in office included a former member of the House of Representatives, Dr Moroof Akinwande; Chairman of the 1981 Set Welfare Committee, Lateef Adeyeye; the Senior Boy and Senior Girl of the set, Lukman Alarape and Titilayo Olaleye, née Adebowale; and Sola Adeyemo, Esq., a lawyer and senior journalist.
