AKINWALE ABOLUWADE
Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the party, marking the end of a decades-long association with Nigeria’s leading opposition platform.
In a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of PDP’s Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited a shift in the party’s direction and irreconcilable differences as reasons for his departure.

A copy of the letter was shared on social media platform X by his Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth, on Wednesday.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read. “It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision… However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had received in the PDP, including serving two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and contesting the presidency twice under its banner.
His exit comes amid mounting speculation over the formation of a new political alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku has openly backed the Alliance Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition of like-minded politicians reportedly being positioned as a “third force” to challenge both the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
