A Federal High Court siting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has sentenced Babatunde Akintomiwa, to 14 months imprisonment for impersonation and N400,000 fraud.
Justice Patricia Ajoku convicted Akintomiwa based on the plea bargain agreement between him and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
A report by the News Agency of Nigeria says Akintomiwa, who operated a fictitious email address, specialised in deceiving unsuspecting foreigners.
He was said to have committed the crime in question on April 19, 2019, in Ibadan.
According to the judge, the sentence was in accordance with the provisions of Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 that spelt out how one who pleads guilty to an offence should be sentenced.
She said, “I hope that Akintomiwa is remorseful of his actions and willing to contribute positively to society now.
“However, to serve as a warning to those engaging in the crime, Akintomiwa is sentenced to 14 months in prison. The sentence starts from the date he was first arrested.
“All the exhibits found in his possession are forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.”
According to counsel to the EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office, Mrs Iyabo Daramola, the convict was arraigned on one count amended charge bordering on impersonation.
