AKINWALE ABOLUWADE
The demise of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Ige Olakulehin I, has been described as a monumental loss to Ibadan, given his legacy of fearlessness, fairness and justice.
In a condolence message personally signed and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the Asiwaju Atunluse of Ibadanland, Chief Ademola Aremu, said the late monarch should be celebrated rather than mourned for his enduring contributions to peace and the preservation of Ibadan tradition.
Chief Aremu, from Aliiwo in Ibadan, expressed deep shock over the monarch’s passing, noting, “Although Baba was advanced in age, we had hoped he would remain with us longer so we could continue to benefit from his wisdom and leadership. But as believers, we submit to the will of the Almighty and are grateful for the gift of a king who embodied goodwill, discipline, and genuine love for Ibadan.”

He urged the late king’s family not to grieve, but to take pride in the legacies of peace, integrity, and cultural reverence he left behind. He also extended his condolences to all sons and daughters of Ibadan, both at home and abroad, encouraging them to reflect on the peaceful atmosphere that characterized Oba Olakulehin’s short reign.
Chief Aremu also called for prayers for the royal family and for Ibadanland as a whole. He urged support for the incoming Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, praying that his reign would usher in greater progress and prosperity for the ancient city.
He congratulated Oba Ladoja on his imminent ascension to the throne, expressing hope that the new monarch would be blessed with strength and long life to make impactful contributions to the growth of Ibadanland.
Oba Olakulehin, who passed on at age 90, ascended the throne on July 11, 2024, following the death of Oba Lekan Balogun, CFR, Alli Okunmade II, who reigned from March 11, 2022, to March 14, 2024.
