AKINWALE ABOLUWADE
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors at the age of 90.
It was gathered that the revered monarch passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025—exactly one year after he ascended the throne of his forefathers.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin’s death came just two days after he celebrated his 90th birthday.
His brief reign as the 43rd Olubadan was marked by wisdom, humility and efforts to foster peace and unity among the diverse communities of Ibadanland.
He was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun.
Before ascending the throne, Oba Olakulehin had a long and distinguished career in both public service and traditional leadership, having risen through the ranks in the Balogun line of the Olubadan chieftaincy system.
He was widely respected for his commitment to the development of Ibadan and his deep knowledge of Yoruba culture and tradition.
Meanwhile, preparations for his final rites are expected to begin shortly, as the Ibadan Traditional Council and Oyo State Government work together to honour his memory.
His passing opens the process for selecting a new Olubadan in accordance with the unique succession structure of Ibadanland.
