An eyewitness named Adeosun Azeez stated that the clash started at Irojo area of the town around 7pm.

The fight later spread to other parts of the town identified as strongholds of the cultists.

Said Azees, “Some guys on motorcycle suddenly started shooting around Irojo inflicting injuries on residents of the area who scampered for safety.

“In what looks like a revenge attack, another set confronted them and both groups engaged in shootout.

“Other cultists from other hideout joined in the fracas thereby spreading the crisis to other parts of the town. About 10 people were killed in different areas of the town, majorly cult members.”

It was learnt that shop owners were forced to lock their shops while residents also ran for safety, thereby deserting the major streets in the town.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State Command, SP Yemisi Opalola, said that only five persons were killed in the cult war.

Opalola said that “More special police units have been deployed to the hotspots to further curb breakdown of law and order.”
