AKINWALE ABOLUWADE

The apex body of the Yoruba self determination group, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, has mourned the death of Yoruba nationalist, Prof. Adewale Adeniran.

Describing him as a courageous advocate of the Yoruba Nation, the group said he is a leader whose contributions to the self-determination struggle would remain unforgettable.

Adeniran, a former Commissioner for Education in Osun State, an academic and former university don, died on July 26, 2026, at the age of 81.

The group said in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Yemi Akindele, that the late professor devoted the latter part of his life to the campaign for a sovereign Yoruba Nation and remained committed to the struggle until his death.

The organisation described Adeniran as a selfless leader, respected teacher and unwavering voice for the Yoruba people, adding that he played a key role in the movement alongside its mentor, Prof. Emeritus Stephen Adebanji Akintoye.

According to the statement, Adeniran served as a deputy to Akintoye in coordinating activities aimed at advancing the Yoruba self-determination cause.

The statement read that “Professor Adewale Adeniran was a courageous and selfless agitator for a sovereign Yoruba Nation. He worked sacrificially towards the emancipation of the Yoruba people and will be greatly missed for his dedication to the cause.”

The group extended its condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, friends, associates, members of the Yoruba race and Yoruba Nation advocates worldwide, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.

Adeniran, widely known for his advocacy on Yoruba self-determination in his later years, served as the pioneer Commissioner for Education in Osun State in 1992.
