AKINWALE ABOLUWADE
The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has promised prompt payment of workers’ salaries, allowances and other entitlements if elected governor in 2027.
Alli gave the assurance against the backdrop of the ongoing strike by medical and dental officers in the state public service and the indefinite industrial action declared by the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
In a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of his campaign organisation, Bisi Oladele, the APC candidate criticised Governor Seyi Makinde for allegedly neglecting the demands of the striking workers while pursuing his political ambition, describing the governor’s actions as insensitive to the plight of residents and students.
Alli said the disputes, which border on outstanding allowances, salary restoration, promotion arrears and the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, should not have been allowed to disrupt essential healthcare and educational services.
He warned that the withdrawal of medical services would further worsen the challenges facing public hospitals, particularly for pregnant women, children, pensioners and low-income earners who depend on government-owned health facilities.
The APC candidate also faulted the governor for allegedly prioritising political activities outside the state over efforts to resolve the industrial disputes, insisting that workers’ welfare and the wellbeing of residents should take precedence.
Alli, however, appealed to the striking doctors and lecturers to remain open to dialogue while urging the state government to make immediate arrangements to protect patients requiring emergency and life-saving medical attention.
He pledged that his administration, if elected, would prioritise workers’ welfare, prompt payment of entitlements, improved engagement with labour unions and the provision of modern equipment and essential facilities in public hospitals.
