President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former President.
The announcement was made on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to honour Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.
“May we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as the Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu declared at the close of the session.

Paying glowing tributes, Tinubu described Buhari as “a good man, a decent man, an honourable man,” whose legacy of integrity, patriotism and simplicity will live on. He acknowledged that while Buhari was not perfect, his moral uprightness and disciplined leadership stood out.
“No leader is perfect,” Tinubu said. “But President Buhari was, in every sense, a man of principle. His record may be debated, but his incorruptible character and moral force are undeniable.”
Reflecting on their political journey, Tinubu recalled how they forged an alliance that led to Nigeria’s historic democratic transition in 2015. “He governed with restraint, led with dignity, and never sought to impose himself after leaving office,” Tinubu added.
The President also commended the Katsina State Government and the Inter-Ministerial Committee for organising a swift and dignified state funeral in Daura within 48 hours of Buhari’s death.
Concluding his tribute, Tinubu prayed: “Mai Gaskiya, the People’s General, your duty is done. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. Nigeria will remember you.”
