The leader of the One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has condemned the harassment, extortion and killings of innocent citizens by the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad, leading to the recent unrest in the land.
Recall that the nationwide #EndSARS protests by the youth against police brutality degenerated into the killing of innocent youth at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos consequently resulting to the hijack of the process by hoodlums who unleashed terror on the land, killing scores of police personnel.
Maharaj Ji, who blamed the development on lack of proper application of Police Act by police personnel, said any form of brutality against the citizenry was condemnable.
He said, “Having witnessed the development in our country in the last few weeks, I hereby condemn in totality the actions, behaviours and attitude of the SARS police and their operations in the last few years.
“As a result of lack of proper application of Police Acts by police officers, the inability of high ranking officials in the force and political class to question or query dangerous trends of Nigeria Police acting with impunity, most cases always end up being swept under the carpet.”
He said the impunity perpetrated by the operatives culminated in the weeks of long protests called out by youth in order to vent their frustrations and grievances to the unabated killings of innocent citizens, alarming rates of unemployment, illegal detentions, extortions, physical assaults and brutality, collection of bail money, extra judicial killings as well as an outlook of a bleak future with no hope in sight.
He also took a swipe at the team of soldiers, who went to Lekki Tollgate to attack peaceful protesters, saying, “it was a dastardly act.”
He said President Muhammadu Buhari must ensure that the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigate what led to the loss of lives and the negligence of duties towards safeguarding lives and properties.
While calling for a change of leadership and entrenchment of an egalitarian society, he sympathised with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the civil unrest.
He urged the protesters to embrace peace by dialoguing with government, saying the former should compensate the families of those who lost their loved ones in the saga.
