The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female law student, identified simply as Tomisin, and appealed to members of the university community to remain calm as efforts intensify to secure her release.
In a statement issued by the SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, the union disclosed that Tomisin had embarked on a religious retreat alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.
Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and Vice-President of the fellowship’s University of Ibadan chapter.
The union dismissed reports circulating on social media that eight UI students were missing, clarifying that Tomisin is the only student of the institution currently unaccounted for.
According to Adeboye, the union has initiated the necessary engagements to establish the facts surrounding the incident and has contacted relevant religious organisations and security agencies to facilitate prompt intervention.
Tomisin was reportedly returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when communication with her was lost. Concerns over her whereabouts heightened after she failed to sit for her faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.
Reports indicated that another UI student from the Department of Music, who attended the conference, returned safely, while only the vehicle conveying the General Director remains unaccounted for.
Confirming the development, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ademola Lewis, said the university was aware of the situation, although it had not been notified beforehand of the trip.
He added that efforts were ongoing to ensure the student’s safe return and urged members of the university community to avoid spreading unverified information capable of worsening the situation.
Meanwhile, Oyo Reporters Online also confirmed the report of the missing law student with the Director of Public Communication, UI, Mrs Joke Akinpelu, on Friday.
